Sri Elephant Rajendran says, they are about 45 tanks in Temple town of Kumbhakonam and 11 channels passing through the temple city of Kumbhakonam. But now the condition is that all the 45 tanks and also various temples are encroached and filled with sand and buildings and mosque in the temple water body.
One mosque is constructed in the Temple pond, one Arabic college having 3 storey big building illegally constructed in the temple’s water tank. And also people encroached and constructed homes both small houses and well-made buildings.
This is why the water bodies around Kumbhakonam had completely gone away there are 11 channels with in 2kms and water passing through the channels from the adjacent river Kaveri that is in the northern side and river Arasalar in southern side. The water was passing through these channels and made the city a green city.
But the ruthless persons having the political backing completely closed the channels and encroached and constructed houses and other commercial established in the channels also.
Finally I filled a law suit before Madras High Court. And they ordered to remove all the encroachments. They are 925 encroached and all the buildings were demolished and all the encroachments will it in the boundary of the tank. But they already tried to get stay and objected this process in 2015 and finally ended in 2018.For 3 yrs they also tried to object and stop the case, but High court refused and gave order of eviction and particularly gave on Pattamarai tank.
They are 4 mandapams on the corners of the tank which was occupied by flower vendor, readymade shop and shoe mart and some brass vessels in the mandapam itself. First this is was removed and now intended only for devotees for having the darshan and change of dress during the seasons in the mandapam.
One of the mandapam fully was occupied by a shoe vendor who is a Muslim and sold leather shoes also. And he was also evicted. This was possible because of the petition and order passed by the High court.
Now I’m intended to bring back the past glory of 44tanks and 11 channels which is now filled with debris and we have to defile all the tanks ,and there by passing of water to all 44 tanks from the channel and also planning to plant trees on either side of the channels and bring the glory of the past, which was 100 years back.
If this process is completed the temple city will be just like Ooty and Kodiakanal in climate by passing of water inside the city and flourishing of the water tanks close to the 1 km radius. It will be very good for the environment also. And the water will be allowed to go through both this rivers and the glory will be bought.
On the 44 tanks 8 tanks are in good condition and is the direct control of the temple authority and other 36 tanks are completely filled with debris and several buildings constructed around this tanks.
After evicting all the encroachers and I’m going to defile all the tanks and water will be allowed to go and construction of steeps and boundary to the tanks. Bring Lilies and Lotus flowers to the tank and tank will get water be a great boon to the devotees and people going to the temple can make use of the tank.
Completing the work the water level will be increased and the city will also be environmental friendly and good climate will come. For this I want some good people to come and adopt one or two tanks and bring back their original status. And some people have already agreed to adopt nearly 4 tanks. We need people to adopt the other 32 tanks and bear the cost and bring them to their previous status. I request good people to contribute in the interest of the environment and temple. People should come forward to adopt one or two tanks.
