Why Kashmiri Sikhs never left the valley

Why Kashmiri Sikhs never left the valley

Why Kashmiri Sikhs never left the valley en-mass like Kashmiri Pandits?

To answer this question, I have go back into the time when it all started! Sikhs came to Kashmir valley when Maharaja Ranjit Singh liberated Kashmir of barbaric Pathans. The revered sixth guru , Guru Hargobind ji had come to Kashmir and stayed for some time that’s how we have a grand gurdwara called “Chathi Padshahi” in Srinagar. In the year 1990 there were close to 60000 Sikhs in the valley when close to half a million of Kashmiri Pandits had to flee from Kashmir after radicalized local Muslims and terrorists trained by Pakistan ISI unleashed mass murder, rapes, arson, looting and frenzied processions on the local populace of Kashmiri Hindus resulting in a mass forced migration of an entire race, the original aborigines of the valley to various parts of India beginning with Udhampur and Jammu. Thus, rendering them refugees in their own land!
Paid media and chronic lie peddlers convey that Sikhs didn’t leave the valley to provide source of diversity in Kashmir. The truth is far from what is being dished out by the leftist historians and media persons. I am a Kashmiri Pandit, did my high school and college from the valley and I had a few Sikhs in my school and then in College! My Dad’s Assistant was a Sikh from Tral who used to come to our home many times and have food with us. Sikhs in Villages were mostly farmers, some owned fruit orchids and the Urban Sikhs were mainly traders or skilled craftsmen in the valley and some were the working-class teachers, a few doctors, engineers, pharmacist and media ( door darshan and radio)! Majority of the Sikhs unlike Kashmiri Pandits were in Villages like Tral, Baramulla & Chiitsinghpura and rest of them were in Srinagar.
Sikhs didn’t leave the valley not for love of the land or communal harmony as media then and now reported, the matter the fact is that call for a separate homeland for Sikhs, Khalistan was at its peak in 1989-1990! In 1984 operational Bluestar had just happened and after Indira Gandhi’s murder the same year resulting in the darkest chapter of otherwise tolerant India, Sikh massacre happened, in which more than 3000 innocent Indian Sikhs were brutally killed by Congress goons lead by congress leaders like Jagdish Tytler and H K L Bhagat, Sajjan Kumar and trade-union leader Lalit Maken! The Khalistan moment was at its pinnacle in 1990. This was the time when Pakistan was funding and supporting the decade long moment and now the militants in Kashmir under its notorious bleed India by a thousand cuts plan.
Terror organisations like Babbar Kahlasa, Khalistan commando force, Dal Khalsa and many other terror organizations were trained virtually in the same terror camps along with new recruits from Kashmir for Terror outfits like JKLF, Allah Tigers, Hizbul Mujahedin to name a few. In 1990 when the forced migration of Hindus started, the architects of this Jihadi mayhem considered Sikhs of Kashmir as an asset in Kashmir due to its geographical closeness between Kashmir and Panjab which will support its evil design and the two estranged communities of India will become a force multiplier against India and rise together in tandem against Indian union and not just liberate Kashmir but Panjab too. Sikhs population in Kashmir was not as spread as Kashmiri Hindus being limited to a few villages. As per the directives from Pak ISI, the local terror commanders didn’t touch the distributed population of Sikhs like they did in case of Hindus. No Sikh house had a notice pasted on its door to convert to Islam, leave the valley or die. Not a single Sikh, a common man or a known figure was killed unlike hundreds of Hindus were killed in broad day light, there dead bodies desecrated, there women raped and cut into pieces, there houses, temples& shops looted & burnt to ground.

So, by the fall of 1990 Kashmir valley saw mass migration of 90 percent of Hindus and Sikhs stayed put. The year 1990 was time of Aazadi processions on the behest of Jihadi outfits and no procession is complete without slogans mostly about establishment of Islamic state “Nizam-e-Mustafa” and Aazadi where people were forced to be part of the procession which included Hindus and Sikhs at times and in this mayhem time,

I remember a funny slogan was raised by Muslims & Sikhs “Jatka Halal Bhai Bhai, Moong ki Dal Kahan Se Aayee ? Loosely translated as Jatka (Sikh way of Slaughtering an animal for meat, mostly goat) Halal (Muslim way of Slaughtering an animal for meat, goat, cow or buffalo) are brothers (so as to say Sikhs and Muslims are brothers, where did Moong Ki Dal (Lentil aka Kashmiri Hindus) come from? mostly goat gansey. This was probably the first time in history that a Sikh or Sikhs community turned hostile and disowned its own blood and flesh for those very forced they were created to defend its own. Yes, A Sikh, my Gur Sikhs, the followers of Hind di Chadar Guru Teg Bahadur ji Maharaj turned its back toward Kashmiri Pundits for whome the protector of Janeo and Tilak laid his head and gave the most supreme sacrifice in recorded history!
These Khalsa followers forgot why Khalsa Panth was created by Dashmesh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, they forgot what our gurus had in mind when establishing the Panth and joined the enemies against there own kith and Kin.
Jatka and Halal soon parted ways, Muslims started usurping the lands and orchids of Sikhs, forced conversion of there Girls started what is known today as “Love Jiahd”, Sikhs started losing business and the next 10 years saw them migrating to Srinagar city and once land owners and business men were now migrant labors who had now to work at shops, businesses owned by local Muslims. This is pretty clear from the attached Video.
As if this was not enough, soon reality bit these estranged Singhs, when Bill Clinton was visiting India in the year 2000, militant’s terror mandarins in the valley wanted to convey a message, a message soaked in the blood to the U.S. president that the Kashmir issue was alive and kicking, they couldn’t find soft targets like Hindus who had already left the valley so they massacred 38 Sikhs in the village of Chiitsinghpura. US president Bill Clinton was still in Delhi when they committed this mass murder.
History is the biggest teacher and my Kashmiri Singh’s should have taken the lesson from history which happened very much in Kashmir, the year was 1671 when mogul’s ruled Kashmir. Many Pseudo liberals talk about Sufi’s and the message of love & oneness of God they spread, but the truth is far from reality again. Aurangzeb the most fanatic and notorious Mogul Emperor was helped to annex the throne by Naqshbandis who were So called Sufis! These Naqshbandi favoured Aurangzeb over his brother Dara Shikoh a highly enlightened and learnt scion, the 1st born of Emperor Shahjahan, a great scholar of Sanskrit who translated Indian scriptures into Persian who studied them in Srinagar Kashmir in a place which is called Pari Mahal or the palace of fairies. He was beheaded by Aurangzeb and his head was gifted to Emperor Shahjahan his father who was imprisoned to usurp the throne.
Now the emperor of India, Aurangzeb was pushed by Naqshbandi Sufis to proselytize India and establish an Islamic order across the Empire! Aurangzeb asked his religious preachers where to start the process of proselytization to which the Naqshbandi Sufis guided him to start from Kashmir. Aurangzeb deputed his most barbaric and ruthless aid Iftikhar Khan as the governor of Kashmir who unleashed a rein of terror forcing the Hindus of Kashmir to covert to Islam or die. 100’s of Hindus were butchered on a daily basis who preferred to die than change their faith. Seeing the sword of Islam once again spilling the blood of Kashmiri Pandits, A group of Kashmiri Pandits led by my ancestor Pt. Kripa Ram Dutt sneaked out of the valley and met Guru Teg Bahudur Ji Maharaj at Anandpur Sahib. Guruji was asked to save the “Janeo” (sacred Thread) and Tilak (a mark worn by a Hindu on the forehead) Guruji told Kashmiri Brahmins “Go tell Aurangzeb that if they can convert your Guru then you will all become Muslims.” Kirpa Ram obliged and Aurangzeb issued summons for Guruji! In the summer of 1675, Guruji, along with some of his companions were finally brought to Delhi and asked to convert to Islam or else face the penalty of death. Guru ji was also asked to perform a miracle. Guru Tegh Bahadur averred that he would rather sacrifice his life than give up his faith and his freedom or belief or perform a miracle. Thus, under Aurangzeb’s orders, Guru ji and his companions were tortured. The Guru was chained and imprisoned in a cage and was tortured in the cruellest and the most inhuman ways for five long days. In order to terrorise him further into submission, one of his distinguished devotees (Bhai Mati Das) was sawn alive, another (Bhai Dyal Das) was boiled in the cauldron and the third (Bhai Sati Das) was roasted alive before the Guru. Finally, the Guru himself was beheaded, under imperial warrant, in broad daylight, in the middle of a public square, the most prominent public place in India, called Chandni Chowk, of Delhi, on the charge that he was a stumbling block preventing the spread of Islam in the Indian subcontinent. The exact location of the beheading is marked by Gurdwara Sis Ganj in Delhi.
His martyrdom was yet another challenge to the Sikh conscience. It was then realized that there could be no understanding between an insensate power imbrued with blood and a proud people wedded to a life of peace with honour. The sacrifice roused the Hindus from their passive silence and gave them the fortitude to understand the power that comes from self-respect and sacrifice. Guru Tegh Bahadur thus earned the affectionate title of “Hind-di-Chadar” or the Shield of India. After Guru Tegh Bahadur’s arrest and martyrdom in Delhi, Pandit Kirpa Ram returned to Anandpur and Guru Tegh Bahadur ji’s son Gobind Rai became the tenth and final Guru in human form. Guru Gobind Singh ji from 1675 until 1690 took an extensive course in Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, and Punjabi in educating himself. According to chronicles, Pandit Kirpa Ram Dutt helped Guru Gobind Singh in his Sanskrit studies. Guru Gobind Singh ji having contemplated the history of Sikhi, the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev (his great grand father), the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur (his father) decided to create the Khalsa. The Khalsa Panth was created at Anandpur Sahib on March 31st 1699. My ancestor Pandit Kirpa Ram Dutt became Kirpa Singh after taking ” Khanda Bate da Pahul”. In 1699 he received the holy Amrit and entered the fold of the Khalsa.
Thousands of Sikhs are still languishing in Kashmir as 3rd class citizens, there are many Sikh families who sisters and daughters were abducted and forced to marry Muslims!
I pray to almighty, omnipresent, omniscient creator of this world and beyond to prevail sense on all those who have derailed from there paths. My uniformed, disciplined and brave brother from another mother, my “agraj” (eldest), my Sikh, my Sardar doesn’t feel himself different from me! We were, are and will always be proud if you, your submission to serve humanity, your sacrifices and your submission to the cause of mother India. Yes, grave mistake, unprecedented blunder happened in 1984 for which we all will remained ashamed till we are alive but it was a mad frenzy created by power brokers who are blind and conscienceless.
The kinship of the religions of India stems from the fact that Jains, Buddhists and Sikhs look back to Hinduism as their common mother. —S. Vernon McCasland, Religions of the World
Let us all pledge that we Hindus and Sikhs any where in the world will forgive and forget and do not do anything silly which will strengthen those very forces for which Khalsa Panth was created by the seers.

Waahe Guru Ji Da Khalsa Waahe Guru Ji Di Fateh !

Very painful history! The time has come at least now history books should be re-written throwing light on facts of life for the future generations to learn about the sacred path taken by Sikh Gurus & Leaders of Kashmiri Pandits in protecting their culture & heritage in Jammu & Kashmir. Representations should be made to the Union Govt of India to act on these lines…

Excellent write up by capturing history, heritage relationship of Sikhs to Kashmir, india and Kashmiri Pandits.
Sikhs of Kashmir need to be helped and saved and protected. They did make mistakes by turning their back to Kashmiri Pandits in 1989 thinking they will not be targeted by militants. Vahe Guru Ji Khalsa Vhe Guru Ji ji Fateh.

We are aware of the immense sacrifice made by the Sikhs during the ages . But every time, one reads about the horrific torture inflicted on Guru Tegh Bahadurji, one just can not resist shedding tears . One must also complement the ancestors of Vidya Bhushan Dhar for having recorded the complete history and having been blessed as subservient followers of the great Gurus, very much in physical form. Thanks a lot for highlighted history underlying the age old bond between Hindus and Sikhs !!
